Haleakalā silversword
The Haleakalā silversword is a unique plant species native to the volcanic slopes of Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii. It is known for its striking appearance, featuring long, silver, sword-like leaves that can grow up to three feet tall. This plant thrives in harsh, high-altitude environments and is adapted to survive in poor soil conditions.
The silversword blooms only once in its lifetime, producing a tall flower stalk covered in bright yellow flowers. After flowering, the plant dies, completing its life cycle. Conservation efforts are in place to protect this endangered species from threats such as habitat loss and invasive species.
