HMG-CoA
HMG-CoA, or 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A, is a crucial compound in the body's metabolic pathways. It plays a significant role in the synthesis of cholesterol and other important biomolecules. HMG-CoA is produced during the breakdown of fatty acids and the metabolism of certain amino acids.
In addition to its role in cholesterol production, HMG-CoA is also a target for certain medications, such as statins. These drugs help lower cholesterol levels in the blood by inhibiting the enzyme that converts HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor in cholesterol synthesis. This action can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
