Gwangmu Reform
The Gwangmu Reform was a series of political, economic, and social changes in the late 19th century in Korea. Initiated by Emperor Gojong in 1897, the reforms aimed to modernize the country and strengthen its sovereignty against foreign powers. Key changes included the establishment of a modern military, the introduction of a new legal system, and the promotion of education.
These reforms also sought to improve infrastructure, such as railways and telegraphs, to facilitate communication and trade. However, the Gwangmu Reform faced resistance from conservative factions and ultimately struggled to achieve its goals, leading to increased foreign influence in Korea.
