Gojong
Gojong was the first Emperor of the Korean Empire, reigning from 1897 to 1907. Born in 1852, he initially ruled as King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty before declaring the establishment of the empire to assert Korea's sovereignty amid increasing foreign influence. His reign was marked by efforts to modernize the country and strengthen its independence.
During his rule, Gojong faced significant challenges, including pressure from Japan and Western powers. He sought to reform the military, education, and infrastructure, aiming to transform Korea into a modern state. However, his reign ended with his abdication in 1907, leading to increased Japanese control over Korea.
