Great Star of Africa
The "Great Star of Africa," also known as the Cullinan Diamond, is the largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered, weighing an impressive 3,106 carats. Found in 1905 in South Africa, it was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the mine where it was unearthed. The diamond was later cut into several smaller gems, with the largest piece, the Cullinan I, weighing 530.2 carats.
The Cullinan I, also referred to as the "Great Star of Africa," is now part of the British Crown Jewels. It is set in the head of the Sceptre with Cross, which is displayed in the Tower of London. The diamond's remarkable clarity and size make it a significant symbol of both natural beauty and historical importance.
