Great Fire of Rome
The Great Fire of Rome occurred in July 64 AD and lasted for six days, devastating much of the city. It began in the shops containing flammable materials near the Circus Maximus and quickly spread, destroying homes, temples, and public buildings. Historical accounts suggest that about two-thirds of Rome was affected by the fire.
Emperor Nero was in Antium when the fire broke out. After the flames were extinguished, he initiated rebuilding efforts and implemented stricter building codes. Some sources claim that Nero blamed the Christians for the fire, leading to their persecution in the city.
