Great Dam of Ma'rib
The Great Dam of Ma'rib, located in present-day Yemen, is an ancient engineering marvel built around the 8th century BCE. It was constructed to control the flow of the Wadi Dhana river, allowing for irrigation and the cultivation of crops in the arid region. The dam played a crucial role in the prosperity of the ancient Sabaean civilization.
The dam was originally about 600 meters long and 20 meters high, showcasing advanced techniques for its time. Over the centuries, it suffered from neglect and natural disasters, leading to its eventual collapse in the 6th century CE. Despite this, the Great Dam of Ma'rib remains a significant symbol of ancient ingenuity.
