Government of India Act 1858
The Government of India Act 1858 was a significant legislation passed by the British Parliament, marking the end of the East India Company's rule in India. It transferred control of India from the Company to the British Crown, establishing direct governance. This act aimed to improve administration and address the issues that arose during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
Under this act, a new position called the Secretary of State for India was created, responsible for overseeing Indian affairs. The act also established a council to assist the Secretary, ensuring that Indian governance was more accountable to the British government.
