Gomburza
Gomburza refers to a group of three Filipino priests: Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora. They were executed by the Spanish colonial government on February 17, 1872, in Bagumbayan, now known as Luneta Park in Manila. Their execution was a response to the growing nationalist sentiments in the Philippines and was seen as a punishment for their alleged involvement in a mutiny at Cavite.
The martyrdom of Gomburza sparked outrage among Filipinos and became a symbol of the fight against colonial oppression. Their legacy inspired future generations, including national hero José Rizal, who advocated for reforms and independence from Spanish rule. Gomburza's story remains a significant part of Philippine history.
