Global Seed Vault
The Global Seed Vault, located on the Svalbard archipelago in Norway, is a secure facility designed to store seeds from around the world. Its purpose is to preserve genetic diversity and protect against potential threats to global food supply, such as climate change, natural disasters, and war. The vault can hold up to 4.5 million seed samples, ensuring that vital crops can be restored if they are lost.
Opened in 2008, the Global Seed Vault is often referred to as the "Doomsday Vault." It is managed by the Norwegian government, the Global Crop Diversity Trust, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The facility is built to withstand extreme conditions, providing a safe haven for seeds for future generations.
