Gichin Funakoshi
Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) was a Japanese martial artist and the founder of Shotokan Karate. He is credited with popularizing karate outside of Japan, emphasizing its philosophical and spiritual aspects alongside physical training. Funakoshi's teachings focused on character development, discipline, and respect.
Born in Okinawa, Funakoshi began training in karate at a young age. He later moved to Tokyo to introduce karate to a broader audience, establishing the first karate dojo in Japan. His book, Karate-Do: My Way of Life, outlines his philosophy and the principles of karate, influencing generations of martial artists worldwide.
