Giant Olmec Heads
The Giant Olmec Heads are monumental stone sculptures created by the Olmec civilization, which thrived in ancient Mesoamerica around 1200 to 400 BCE. These heads, made from basalt, can weigh up to 40 tons and stand over 10 feet tall. They are believed to represent rulers or important figures, showcasing the Olmec's advanced artistry and engineering skills.
Discovered primarily in the Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco, the heads feature distinct facial features, including flat noses and thick lips. Each head is unique, with variations in expression and headdress, reflecting the diversity of the Olmec culture and their societal hierarchy.
