Geniohyoid Muscle
The geniohyoid muscle is a small, paired muscle located in the neck. It originates from the mental spine of the mandible and inserts into the body of the hyoid bone. This muscle plays a crucial role in swallowing and speaking by helping to elevate the hyoid bone and the floor of the mouth.
In addition to its primary functions, the geniohyoid muscle assists in the movement of the tongue and aids in the opening of the airway during breathing. It is innervated by the hypoglossal nerve, which is responsible for controlling tongue movements.
