Digastric Muscle
The digastric muscle is a small muscle located in the neck, playing a crucial role in the movement of the jaw. It consists of two muscle bellies, the anterior and posterior, connected by an intermediate tendon. This muscle helps in lowering the jaw and elevating the hyoid bone, which is important for swallowing and speaking.
The digastric muscle is innervated by two different nerves: the anterior belly is supplied by the mylohyoid nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve, while the posterior belly is innervated by the facial nerve. Its proper function is essential for various activities, including chewing and vocalization.
