Mylohyoid Muscle
The mylohyoid muscle is a thin, flat muscle located in the floor of the mouth. It stretches from the mandible (lower jaw) to the hyoid bone, forming a supportive platform for the tongue. This muscle plays a crucial role in swallowing and speaking by helping to elevate the floor of the mouth and the tongue.
The mylohyoid muscle is innervated by the mylohyoid nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve. It is also involved in the movement of food during chewing, assisting in the manipulation and movement of the tongue and bolus. Proper function of this muscle is essential for effective oral and pharyngeal activities.
