Gardasil is a vaccine designed to protect against certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. It is recommended for preteens, but can be given to individuals up to age 45. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to recognize and fight off the virus.
The vaccine targets the most common high-risk HPV types, including HPV 16 and HPV 18, which are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases. Additionally, Gardasil also protects against HPV 6 and HPV 11, which can cause genital warts. Vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of developing these conditions.
