Fructans
Fructans are a type of carbohydrate made up of chains of fructose molecules. They are classified as a soluble fiber and are found in various foods, including wheat, onions, garlic, and artichokes. Fructans are not easily digested in the small intestine, which allows them to reach the large intestine, where they can be fermented by gut bacteria.
This fermentation process can produce gas and other byproducts, which may lead to digestive discomfort in some individuals, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, fructans also have potential health benefits, such as promoting gut health and supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
