Franklinia alatamaha
Franklinia alatamaha is a flowering tree native to the southeastern United States, specifically found along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia. It belongs to the Theaceae family and is known for its beautiful white flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall and has glossy green leaves that turn vibrant colors in autumn.
This species is now extinct in the wild, with the last known specimen collected in 1803. It was named after Benjamin Franklin by botanists John and William Bartram, who were instrumental in its discovery. Today, Franklinia alatamaha is cultivated in gardens and arboretums for its ornamental value.
