Fitzroya Cupressoides
Fitzroya cupressoides, commonly known as the Alerce tree, is a species of conifer native to the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and Argentina. It belongs to the family Cupressaceae and can grow up to 60 meters tall, making it one of the tallest tree species in South America. The tree is known for its durable wood, which has been historically valued for construction and shipbuilding.
The Alerce tree can live for over a thousand years, with some individuals estimated to be more than 3,600 years old. It thrives in moist, mountainous regions and plays a crucial role in its ecosystem by providing habitat for various wildlife species. Due to overexploitation and habitat loss, Fitzroya cupressoides is now considered a vulnerable species.
