First Indo-Pakistani War
The First Indo-Pakistani War took place from October 1947 to January 1949, shortly after the partition of British India into two independent nations, India and Pakistan. The conflict primarily arose over the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which both countries claimed. The war began when tribal militias from Pakistan invaded Kashmir, prompting the Maharaja of Kashmir to seek military assistance from India.
The war ended with a ceasefire brokered by the United Nations in January 1949, resulting in a division of Kashmir along the Line of Control. Approximately one-third of the region came under Pakistan's control, while the rest remained with India. The conflict set the stage for ongoing tensions between the two nations.
