False Dmitry Impostors
The "False Dmitry Impostors" were a series of individuals in early 17th-century Russia who claimed to be the deceased son of Tsar Ivan IV, known as Dmitry Ivanovich. After the real Dmitry's mysterious death in 1591, several impostors emerged, each asserting they were the rightful heir to the Russian throne. These claims led to political instability and conflict during the Time of Troubles.
The most notable of these impostors was the first False Dmitry, who gained support and even seized the throne in 1605. His reign was short-lived, as he was assassinated in 1606. Subsequent impostors continued to appear, further complicating the struggle for power in Russia until the eventual establishment of the Romanov dynasty.
