Estado Novo
The "Estado Novo" was a political regime in Portugal that lasted from 1933 to 1974. It was established by António de Oliveira Salazar, who aimed to create a corporatist state that emphasized nationalism, traditional values, and economic stability. The regime suppressed political opposition and maintained strict control over the media and civil society.
Under Estado Novo, Portugal experienced economic growth, but this was accompanied by repression and censorship. The regime's authoritarian nature led to widespread discontent, culminating in the Carnation Revolution of 1974, which ultimately ended Estado Novo and restored democracy in the country.
