Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a German duke born on June 2, 1818. He became the first Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1826 after the division of the duchy from Saxe-Coburg. Ernst I was known for his efforts in modernizing the duchy and promoting education and culture.
He ruled until his death on August 22, 1893. During his reign, Ernst I fostered relationships with other European royal families, including the British royal family, as his descendants married into various royal houses. His legacy includes contributions to the arts and the establishment of public institutions.
