East Indies
The term "East Indies" historically refers to a region in Southeast Asia, primarily encompassing the islands of present-day Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This area was significant during the Age of Exploration, as European powers sought trade routes for valuable spices, silk, and other goods.
The East Indies were often contrasted with the "West Indies," which refers to the Caribbean islands. The region played a crucial role in global trade and colonization, with countries like Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, and Britain establishing colonies and trading posts throughout the islands.
