Dura-Europos Synagogue
The Dura-Europos Synagogue is an ancient Jewish house of worship located in the ruins of Dura-Europos, a city on the Euphrates River in modern-day Syria. Built in the early 3rd century CE, it is one of the oldest synagogues discovered and is notable for its well-preserved frescoes that depict biblical scenes.
The synagogue features a unique layout, with a central prayer hall and an adjoining room for Torah readings. Its artwork includes vibrant murals illustrating stories from the Hebrew Bible, making it an important site for understanding early Jewish art and culture in the context of the Roman Empire.
