Dermoptera, commonly known as flying lemurs, are a group of gliding mammals found primarily in Southeast Asia. They belong to the family Cynocephalidae and are characterized by their large eyes, flat bodies, and a membrane called the patagium that extends from their neck to their fingertips and toes, allowing them to glide between trees.
These nocturnal creatures primarily feed on leaves, fruits, and flowers. Despite their name, flying lemurs are not true lemurs; they are more closely related to primates and colugos. Dermoptera plays a vital role in their ecosystems by aiding in seed dispersal and maintaining forest health.
