Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the muscle pain and stiffness that typically occurs after intense physical activity, especially if the body is not accustomed to the exercise. It usually begins 12 to 24 hours after the workout and can last for several days. DOMS is most commonly associated with activities that involve eccentric muscle contractions, where muscles lengthen while under tension.
The exact cause of DOMS is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from microscopic damage to muscle fibers during exercise. This damage triggers an inflammatory response, leading to the sensation of soreness. While DOMS can be uncomfortable, it is generally considered a normal part of the muscle recovery process.
