Decompression Sickness
Decompression Sickness, often known as "the bends," occurs when a diver ascends too quickly after spending time at depths. During deep dives, the body absorbs more nitrogen from the air we breathe. If a diver rises too fast, the nitrogen forms bubbles in the bloodstream and tissues, leading to various symptoms.
Symptoms can include joint pain, dizziness, fatigue, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, it can cause paralysis or even death. Treatment typically involves hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where the patient is placed in a pressurized chamber to help reduce the size of the nitrogen bubbles and restore normal function.
