Dönmeh
The term "Dönmeh" refers to a group of people in Turkey who are descendants of Jewish converts to Islam during the late 17th century. They primarily emerged in the city of Sultanahmet and are known for maintaining some of their Jewish customs and traditions while practicing Islam.
Dönmeh communities have historically faced social and religious discrimination, leading to a complex identity. They often kept their beliefs private, which has contributed to misunderstandings about their practices and heritage. Today, the Dönmeh are a small but significant part of Turkey's diverse cultural landscape.
