Sabbateanism
Sabbateanism is a religious movement that emerged in the 17th century, centered around the figure of Sabbatai Zevi, a Jewish mystic who claimed to be the Messiah. His teachings combined elements of Kabbalah and traditional Jewish beliefs, attracting a significant following among Jews in Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
After Sabbatai Zevi converted to Islam in 1666, many of his followers, known as Sabbateans, faced a crisis of faith. Some continued to believe in his messianic role, while others adapted his teachings to fit their new circumstances, leading to various sects and interpretations within the movement.
