Cypriot Turks
Cypriot Turks are the Turkish-speaking community of Cyprus, an island in the eastern Mediterranean. They primarily reside in the northern part of the island, which is known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a self-declared state recognized only by Turkey. The community has a rich cultural heritage influenced by both Turkish and Greek traditions.
Historically, the Cypriot Turks have coexisted with the Greek Cypriots, but tensions have led to conflict, particularly during the 20th century. In 1974, a military coup aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece prompted Turkey to intervene, resulting in the division of the island. Today, Cypriot Turks maintain their distinct identity while navigating the complexities of the island's political landscape.
