Cretan tortoise
The Cretan tortoise, also known as the Mediterranean tortoise, is a species native to the island of Crete in Greece. It is characterized by its dome-shaped shell, which can vary in color from yellow to brown, often with dark patterns. This tortoise typically inhabits dry, rocky areas and feeds on a diet of grasses, herbs, and leaves.
Cretan tortoises are relatively small, usually measuring around 20 to 30 centimeters in length. They are known for their slow movement and long lifespan, often living for several decades. Due to habitat loss and illegal collection, their populations are threatened, making conservation efforts essential for their survival.
