Covenanter Rebellion
The Covenanter Rebellion refers to a series of conflicts in 17th-century Scotland, primarily between the years 1639 and 1651. It arose from the opposition of the Covenanters, a group of Scottish Presbyterians, against the attempts of King Charles I to impose Anglican practices on the Scottish Church. The Covenanters sought to maintain their religious freedoms and uphold the Presbyterian form of governance.
The rebellion included significant battles, such as the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, where Covenanter forces allied with the Parliamentarians against the Royalists. Ultimately, the conflict was part of the larger struggle during the English Civil War, leading to the eventual establishment of a Presbyterian government in Scotland, although it was short-lived.
