Covadonga Basilica
The Covadonga Basilica, officially known as the Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga, is a prominent Roman Catholic church located in the Picos de Europa mountains of northern Spain. Built between 1901 and 1906, it features a neo-Romanesque architectural style and is dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga, the patron saint of Asturias. The basilica is a significant pilgrimage site, attracting visitors for its spiritual and historical importance.
Adjacent to the basilica is the Cueva de Covadonga, a cave that houses a shrine to Our Lady of Covadonga. This site is historically significant as it is linked to the legendary battle of Covadonga in 722 AD, which marked the beginning of the Reconquista.
