Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga
The Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga is a Roman Catholic basilica located in the Picos de Europa mountains in northern Spain. Built between 1901 and 1906, it features a neo-Romanesque architectural style, characterized by its distinctive twin towers and intricate stonework. The basilica is dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga, the patron saint of Asturias.
The site is historically significant as it is associated with the Battle of Covadonga, which marked the beginning of the Christian Reconquista in the 8th century. The basilica is part of the larger Covadonga Sanctuary, which includes the nearby cave where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared.
