Corticospinal Tracts
The corticospinal tracts are a group of nerve pathways that originate in the cerebral cortex of the brain and extend down the spinal cord. They play a crucial role in controlling voluntary movements, particularly those involving the limbs and trunk. These tracts are essential for fine motor skills, allowing for precise movements.
There are two main types of corticospinal tracts: the lateral corticospinal tract and the anterior corticospinal tract. The lateral tract primarily controls movements on the opposite side of the body, while the anterior tract is involved in controlling axial and proximal muscles. Together, they facilitate coordinated and purposeful movement.
