Corallorhiza
Corallorhiza is a genus of orchids commonly known as coralroot orchids. These unique plants are characterized by their lack of chlorophyll, which means they do not perform photosynthesis. Instead, they obtain nutrients by forming symbiotic relationships with fungi in the soil, which in turn break down organic matter.
There are about 12 species of Corallorhiza, primarily found in North America. They typically grow in forested areas and can be identified by their distinctive, fleshy roots that resemble coral. The flowers are often small and can vary in color, ranging from yellow to purple, depending on the species.
