A contusion, commonly known as a bruise, occurs when small blood vessels under the skin break due to an impact or injury. This results in bleeding beneath the skin, causing a discoloration that can range from red to purple and eventually fades to yellow or green as it heals. Contusions can happen anywhere on the body and are often associated with sports injuries or accidents.
Treatment for a contusion typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation, often referred to as the RICE method. Most contusions heal on their own within a few days to weeks, but severe cases may require medical attention to rule out more serious injuries, such as fractures or internal bleeding.
