Communism in Hungary
Communism in Hungary began after World War II when the Hungarian Communist Party gained power with the support of the Soviet Union. In 1949, Hungary became a one-party state, and the government implemented policies that nationalized industries and collectivized agriculture. This period was marked by political repression and the suppression of dissent.
The 1956 Hungarian Revolution was a significant uprising against the communist regime, demanding political reform and greater independence. Although initially successful, the revolution was crushed by Soviet military intervention. Hungary remained a communist state until 1989, when a peaceful transition to democracy began, leading to the establishment of a multi-party system.
