Hungarian Revolution of 1956
The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was a nationwide uprising against the Soviet-backed government in Hungary. It began on October 23, 1956, when students and workers demanded political reforms, including freedom of speech and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. The movement quickly gained momentum, leading to the formation of a new government that sought to establish a neutral and independent Hungary.
The revolution was initially successful, with protesters taking control of Budapest and other cities. However, on November 4, 1956, the Soviet Union intervened militarily, crushing the revolution within weeks. The aftermath saw thousands killed, many imprisoned, and a mass exodus of refugees fleeing the country.
