Hungarian Revolution
The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was a nationwide revolt against the Soviet-imposed policies in Hungary. It began on October 23, when students and intellectuals demanded political reforms, including freedom of speech and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. The movement quickly gained popular support, leading to the formation of a new government that sought to establish a neutral and independent Hungary.
The revolution was initially successful, with the government making several concessions. However, on November 4, the Soviet Union launched a military intervention, crushing the uprising within weeks. The aftermath saw thousands killed, many imprisoned, and a mass exodus of refugees fleeing to the West.
