Common Vole
The Common Vole (Microtus agrestis) is a small rodent found across Europe and parts of Asia. It typically inhabits grasslands, fields, and meadows, where it creates extensive burrow systems. This species has a stocky body, short legs, and a short tail, with fur that is usually brown or gray.
Common Voles are herbivorous, primarily feeding on grasses, seeds, and roots. They play a significant role in their ecosystem by aerating the soil and serving as prey for various predators, including birds of prey and mammals like the European Hedgehog. Their population can fluctuate significantly, often leading to boom-and-bust cycles.
