Cognac region
The Cognac region is located in southwestern France, primarily in the Charente and Charente-Maritime departments. It is renowned for producing Cognac, a type of brandy made from white grapes, particularly the Ugni Blanc variety. The region's unique climate and chalky soil contribute to the high quality of the grapes used in the distillation process.
Cognac is classified into several categories based on age, including VS (Very Special), VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale), and XO (Extra Old). The production process involves double distillation in copper pot stills and aging in oak barrels, which imparts distinct flavors and aromas to the final product.
