The Chicxulub is a large impact crater located on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) in diameter and was formed approximately 66 million years ago when a massive asteroid struck the Earth. This event is widely believed to have contributed to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species at the end of the Cretaceous period. The crater is named after the nearby town of Chicxulub, which means "the devil's tail" in the Mayan language.
