Chestnut Trees
Chestnut trees are large deciduous trees belonging to the genus Castanea. They are known for their broad, spreading canopies and can grow up to 100 feet tall. The trees produce edible nuts, commonly referred to as chestnuts, which are encased in spiky husks. These nuts are a popular food source in many cultures and are often roasted or used in various dishes.
There are several species of chestnut trees, including the American chestnut, European chestnut, and Chinese chestnut. Unfortunately, the American chestnut was nearly wiped out by a fungal disease called chestnut blight in the early 20th century. Efforts are ongoing to restore this iconic tree to its native habitats.
