Charles XIV John of Sweden
Charles XIV John of Sweden, born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte in 1763, was a French military leader who became the King of Sweden in 1818. He was elected to the Swedish throne after the previous king, Charles XIII, adopted him as his heir. His reign marked the beginning of the House of Bernadotte, which continues to this day.
As king, Charles XIV John focused on modernizing Sweden and promoting peace in Europe. He maintained a neutral stance during the Napoleonic Wars and worked to strengthen the country's economy and infrastructure.
