Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located on Hatteras Island in North Carolina. It stands at 210 feet tall, making it the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Built in 1870, it was designed to guide ships safely through the dangerous waters of the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
In 1999, the lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet inland to protect it from erosion. The black and white spiral pattern is a distinctive feature, making it easily recognizable. Today, Cape Hatteras National Seashore preserves the lighthouse and its surrounding area, attracting visitors interested in history and coastal scenery.
