Cacao Pod
The cacao pod is the fruit of the cacao tree, scientifically known as Theobroma cacao. It is typically oval-shaped and can vary in color from green to yellow, orange, or red when ripe. Each pod contains seeds, commonly referred to as cacao beans, which are surrounded by a sweet, white pulp. These beans are the primary ingredient used to produce chocolate.
Cacao pods grow directly from the trunk and larger branches of the cacao tree. They usually measure between 6 to 12 inches in length and can weigh up to 2.5 pounds. Harvesting cacao pods is essential for chocolate production, as the beans inside are fermented, dried, roasted, and processed to create various chocolate products.
