CFTR Modulators
CFTR modulators are a class of medications designed to improve the function of the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) protein, which is defective in individuals with cystic fibrosis. These drugs help to enhance the movement of salt and water in and out of cells, addressing the underlying cause of the disease rather than just its symptoms.
There are different types of CFTR modulators, including correctors, which help the CFTR protein reach the cell surface, and potentiators, which increase the activity of the protein once it is on the surface. Together, these treatments can significantly improve lung function and overall health in patients with cystic fibrosis.
