C-Kit
C-Kit, also known as CD117, is a protein that functions as a receptor tyrosine kinase. It plays a crucial role in cell signaling, particularly in the development and function of certain blood cells, including mast cells and hematopoietic stem cells. Mutations in the C-Kit gene can lead to various health issues, including certain types of cancer.
In addition to its role in normal cell function, C-Kit is also a target for specific cancer therapies. Drugs that inhibit C-Kit activity, such as imatinib, are used to treat conditions like gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Understanding C-Kit is essential for developing effective treatments for these diseases.
